The Alphafly is Nike's maximal racing shoe, the one that took the argument the Vaporfly started in 2017 and pushed it as far as the sport would allow. Where the Vaporfly paired ZoomX with a full length carbon fibre plate, the Alphafly's name carries both Air and Zoom, stacking the company's cushioning technologies into a single road racing platform. This Eliud Kipchoge Kenya execution wears the national palette rather than a Nike one. Reference DD8877-101 identifies it. Everything here descends from Bill Bowerman's conviction in Eugene, Oregon that runners deserved lighter, better equipment than the market was giving them, taken to a place he could not have predicted.
This is race equipment and should be treated that way. For a marathon, wear it with plain shorts and a fitted singlet, thin technical socks and nothing loose at the ankle, and let the national colours carry the whole look. For the final tune up run, keep the kit plain and grey so the session is about the shoe's roll rather than the outfit. Do two or three familiarisation runs before race day, and keep long slow miles in a trainer. Fit is snug and low volume, so try late in the day. Hand clean only, never machine wash, and keep the foam out of hot cars.
This is the most scrutinised category in running. Peer research on the Vaporfly, the shoe that introduced ZoomX, found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and on 31 January 2020 World Athletics issued rules capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring shoes to be generally available at retail. The shoes were not banned, and compliant models remain legal, which is the detail most versions of the story lose. Nike's authority in distance running goes back to Steve Prefontaine, its first track endorser, and continued through sponsored athletes including Sebastian Coe and Michael Johnson.
ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive material in the range, and it is the reason these shoes feel unlike anything in a normal rotation. Combined with a carbon plate, the platform resists compression and rolls you forward rather than letting you sink, which is a sensation you need several runs to trust. The upper is minimal by design, because on a racing shoe every gram is argued over. Practically, that means very little protection, a snug fit and a foam that rewards being saved for the sessions that matter rather than worn for daily mileage.
