Part of the Court Borough line. This release has a leather upper in White/Gym Red/Black. Court Borough is the mid top in Nike's everyday court family, and White Red Black is the colour trio the brand's basketball shoes have used more than any other. That palette is not accidental: after Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984, red, white and black became the visual signature of the most successful sports product line ever built, and it has been echoed across the catalogue ever since. The Borough is the plain spoken version, a mid cut shoe with none of the technology and all of the shape, made for people who want the look of a basketball shoe as a daily object. The company reached that position from a very different start, importing Japanese running shoes as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964.
First: classic proportions, straight leg denim breaking on the collar, a plain white tee, a black jacket, letting the red details pick up anything red you are already carrying. Second: sportswear, black tapered joggers with the hem sitting on the collar and a grey hood, where the mid cut adds bulk in the right place. It is a stable, flat riding shoe good for daily wear and standing, not a cushioned walker for long distance. Size true. Lace to the top eyelet for support or leave the last one open for a softer collar. Clean the white leather with mild soap and a soft cloth, and do not let red panel dye sit wet against the white.
The mid top has a specific place in how Nike's shoes were worn once they left the court. From the 1980s onward Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of urban and hip hop fashion and then of mainstream American youth dress, and the mid cut, worn under a straight leg or with the collar loose, was one of the defining silhouettes of that look. It is worth correcting the story that always attaches to red and black Nike basketball shoes: the model cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines.
The mid cut is the decision that defines this shoe. The collar rises above the ankle bone and is padded, so it holds more than a low top and needs a few wears to soften, while the upper is panelled with the Swoosh stitched across the quarter as a structural overlay. Underneath is a rubber outsole in the same lineage as the waffle tread Bowerman improvised, tuned here for pavement rather than hardwood. White carries the base with Red and Black assigned to the Swoosh and heel details, which is a blocking that keeps the shoe legible from a distance. The white base is the wear point: toe, midsole and collar edge will show city use first.
