The GT line is Nike's modern team basketball family, split by playing style rather than by athlete, and Hustle is the version built for the players who do the unglamorous work: rebounding, defending, absorbing contact. Academy marks the accessible tier, and EP in the title designates the version specified for harder, more abrasive court surfaces, which matters in markets where a lot of basketball is played outdoors. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024, which is why its team basketball line carries authority beyond marketing. That position was won in 1984 with the Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, which made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. It is worth killing a persistent myth: the NBA never banned the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, and Nike paid the fines.
A shoe built for contact prioritises containment. That means a supportive upper with structured overlays, a wide stable base to resist rolling on landings, and an outsole pattern chosen for multidirectional grip rather than for straight line traction. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, has been the company's cushioning foundation since 1987, and Flywire uses cables to hold the foot with minimal upper material, keeping a supportive shoe from becoming a heavy one. The EP specification points at outsole durability for rougher surfaces. Black and white is also functional here: the black hides court dust while the white shows exactly when the outsole needs cleaning for grip.
