Designed by Dylan Raasch and released on 20 August 2018 as part of Nike's Air Max 270 line. This release has the White/White-Persian Violet-Dark Grey colourway. The Heritage Vulc is the plainest shoe Nike SB makes, and that is its argument. Where the SB Dunk carries basketball proportions and a collector's history, this is a low, flat, vulcanised skate shoe with nothing on it but a Swoosh. Black and White is the palette that suits that honesty, a black upper with a white foxing stripe and sole, which is the oldest visual grammar in skate footwear. Nike SB exists because skateboarders adopted Nike shoes before Nike built for them, and the line has spent its life proving it understands the difference between a shoe that looks like skateboarding and a shoe that survives it. A stripped back vulc build is the version that has nothing to prove.
First recipe: black slim or straight jeans with a white tee and a black work jacket, the monochrome uniform this shoe was drawn for, where the white foxing stripe is the only line of contrast. Second recipe: washed grey trousers with a navy hoodie and a beanie, a softer combination that keeps the shoe as the sharpest thing you are wearing. Black and white vulc shoes go with practically everything, which is why skaters buy them in multiples. Vulcanised soles fit close to the ground and true to size, and they wear faster than cupsoles, which is the trade for board feel. Brush the canvas or suede dry, keep them out of standing water, and expect the toe to go first.
Nike SB's place in skateboarding was never automatically granted. The line's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art for a tour flyer drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, a reminder that the culture it entered had its own rules and its own memory. What kept SB credible afterwards was product that worked, and the plain vulcanised shoes did more of that work than the collectible ones. Around this sits Nike's larger pattern of moving from sport into street: from the 1980s the brand became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion through Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models. Skate was a harder room.
Vulcanised construction is the point and it is in the name. Instead of a moulded cupsole glued to the upper, a vulc shoe has a rubber sole bonded under heat with a foxing tape wrapped around the join, which produces a thinner, more flexible sole that gives you board feel almost immediately rather than after a break in period. Style code CD5010 003 covers the black execution. The upper is low and lightly padded at the collar, with reinforcement where an ollie wears through. Nike's outsole heritage still applies underneath: the waffle tread Bowerman created in a kitchen waffle iron established the principle of cutting rubber so it grips in several directions, which is exactly what a board needs.
