Two ways to use it. Race day or a hard tempo session, with a thin technical sock and shorts, where the pink accent does its job of making you visible at 5.30am. Or a long steady run where you want a firmer platform than your daily trainer gives you, paired with a light windbreaker in cold morning air. Do not make this your walking shoe: thin race uppers and firm midsoles do badly under casual all day use. Size with a thumbnail of room at the toe because feet swell over distance. For care, never machine wash it, air dry away from direct sun, and rotate it with a softer trainer so the foam gets time to recover between hard efforts.

Nike's credibility on the road was earned on the track first, starting with Steve Prefontaine, Bill Bowerman's runner at Oregon and the first track athlete the company endorsed, whose statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters. The plated shoe era added a different kind of argument. The colourway is doing more than decorating. Glacier Ice is a cold, near white blue that keeps the upper looking light, and Hyper Pink is used the way race shoes always use a high chroma accent, to make the shoe legible in motion and in photographs. Uppers in this part of Nike's range are built thin and breathable because weight matters more than protection, which means they dry fast, they hold very little water, and they will not shield your foot from a sharp stone. Expect a firmer, more propulsive ride than a soft daily trainer offers, and expect the shoe to feel best when you are running faster rather than jogging.
