Culture Note™
The sixth Cloud is the newest turn of On's oldest shape, the low, light everyday model that carries the founding idea in its most usable form. That idea came out of Zurich in 2010: Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, cut a garden hose into sections and glued them to a sole to see whether a hollow shape could cushion the landing and then stiffen for the push off, and David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti built a company around the result. Mulberry Pebble puts that shape in a deep berry against a grey stone tone, a pairing that is warmer and more considered than the usual monochrome Cloud. It is a colour choice aimed at the street, not the split.
Berry and stone is a colour pairing that wants restraint elsewhere. Recipe one, grey on grey with a punch: charcoal trousers, a light grey crew, a black jacket, so the mulberry is the single warm note. Recipe two, denim and cream: mid wash straight jeans, a cream cable knit, a stone canvas jacket picking up the pebble tone. Low stack and light, so this is a walking, commuting and travel shoe, comfortable on long city days and less suited to heavy training. Size true, expect a snug midfoot. Wipe the pale panels regularly before the stone tone dulls, brush grit from the pod cavities, and let it dry naturally after rain.
The Cloud line is what took On from a Swiss curiosity to about 6,000 retailers across 55 countries by 2019, roughly 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market and 10 percent of Germany's, before the New York Stock Exchange listing in September 2021 under ONON. It did that on ordinary feet, not podiums. The lifestyle half of On's identity arrived through Roger Federer, a shareholder from November 2019 and a collaborator on The Roger from July 2020. Mulberry Pebble belongs to the ordinary half: a shoe bought because it is comfortable and reads as designed, from a company that is fifteen years old and roughly 2 percent of global athletic footwear.
CloudTec on the Cloud runs at low volume: pods engineered into the sole so it compresses horizontally as well as vertically, giving impact absorption and multi directional support without a tall stack. That keeps the shoe close to the ground and easy to move in, which is why this silhouette became On's default rather than its showpiece. Mulberry Pebble uses the two tone split to make the pods legible, the darker berry framing the pale stone so the cavities read clearly. Deep colours hold their look longer than pale ones on a shoe with open cavities. On designs in Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, so the Swiss part is the engineering and the head office.
