Part of On Running's Cloud X 4 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Eclipse. The Cloud X is On's cross-trainer, the shoe the Swiss brand built for people who mix a run with a class with a circuit and refuse to own three pairs. Co-founder Olivier Bernhard framed it as a shoe that adapts right along with you no matter how you mix your workouts, and each generation has pushed further from pure running into gym territory. This is the fourth generation, and Black Eclipse is its stealth version: article 3WE30070106, black through the upper with On's deep Eclipse grey worked into the cage and cloud elements. It is the Cloud X that does not look like gym equipment, which is exactly why it ends up on feet well outside the gym. On's own line for it stays blunt: a flexible, versatile training shoe built for feel-good workouts.
Two ways to use it. Gym day: black leggings or shorts for a cardio-and-class session, treadmill intervals, rope work, box jumps and mobility, where the flexible forefoot and soft CloudTec landings earn their keep. Off day: the same pair with straight jeans or wide black trousers and an oversized tee, because Black Eclipse reads as an ordinary dark sneaker until someone looks at the sole. One honest limit: this is not a lifting shoe. Lab testing rates its lateral stability and torsional rigidity poorly, so keep heavy squats and lateral drills on a flat trainer. On lists the Cloud X 4 as true to size, though testers found it runs slightly small, so if you have a wide foot take the half size up. Wipe the knit with mild soap, air dry, never machine wash.
On's climb from Swiss running specialist to global label has been one of the fastest in footwear, and the Cloud X is the model doing the crossover work. On built it for the multi-workout athlete, someone splitting the week between short runs, classes and circuits, and independent lab testing backs that read: top marks for breathability, genuinely good for light cardio, walking, rope work and box jumps, and comfortable enough to double as an everyday walking shoe. Black Eclipse is the quiet version of all that. The cloud elements are unmistakable in profile, but in this tone the shoe reads clean rather than sporty, which is why it gets worn far outside training. In India, where On is still a considered buy, that dual life is the value.
The upper is a breathable polyester knit with a star lacing system and plush padding through the tongue and heel, so it locks the foot down without pressure points and vents properly in Indian heat. Underneath, Helion superfoam sits over CloudTec elements: the pods collapse on landing for a soft entry, the foam springs back, and an X-shaped Speedboard through the middle flexes at the forefoot and pushes you into the next step. Rubber tread pads sit on the outsole exactly where you actually wear a shoe down, holding grip on gym floors and pavement without adding bulk. The women's pair comes in at 226 grams with a 7mm heel-to-toe drop, light enough for jump work and low enough to keep you connected to the floor.
