Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 December 2021 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Light Orewood Brown/Bright Crimson/White/Newsprint. Newsprint is a colour name about media, which is fitting for a company whose products have spent forty years being written about. This is the Air Jordan 1 Mid in a women's special edition, style code DQ6078 100, using the grey and off white of printed paper as its palette. The line exists because Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and turned a signature shoe into a business of its own, advertised through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon character and eventually spun out as a brand. The Mid sits between the original high top and the low, which makes it the most practical version of the model to actually wear.
A newsprint palette is essentially a grey scale, so it slots into almost anything. First recipe: charcoal and white, grey trousers with a white shirt or tee, where the shoe extends the tonal range at the ankle. Second: full black with the shoe as the only lightener, which is the sharpest way to use an off white and grey scheme. Mids work best with hems that stop just above the collar rather than covering it. This is a women's sizing release and fits close to true to size. Protect the pale panels before first wear, brush dry rather than scrubbing, clean the midsole with a dedicated cleaner, and avoid rain.
Nike's relationship with the press has been a two way business. The company made itself famous through advertising, above all Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, a line Advertising Age later ranked among the century's five best and which is held in the Smithsonian. It has also made headlines it did not want, from the 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution, which brought a lawsuit from Apple Records and saw the ads pulled in March 1988, to the September 2018 Colin Kaepernick campaign, which drew product burnings alongside public support from LeBron James and Serena Williams.
The Mid is a compromise, and a sensible one. It comes up over the ankle bone with a collar shorter than the high top's, so you get some of the wrapped feeling without the full break in period or the styling difficulty of a high shaft. The panelled upper is unchanged in principle: distinct toe, eyestay, heel and Swoosh pieces, which in a newsprint palette read as separate shades of grey and off white rather than as contrasting colours. That subtlety puts the burden on cleanliness, because pale greys grey further when dirty and the whole scheme relies on the tones staying distinct. The midsole is the first thing to spoil the effect.
