Released on 12 August 2023 and part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in Undyed White/Flame. Undyed White Flame names its own method. The upper is left near the colour of the material rather than pushed to a bright optic white, and a warm flame accent runs against it. That restraint suits On, a company whose founding gesture was a man cutting up a garden hose in Zurich in 2010 to prove a shape could do what a material could not. Olivier Bernhard had shown the idea to Nike and been refused, so he built it with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. The Cloudmonster is where that shape became unmissable, an oversized stack that is entirely pod. Undyed puts a natural, slightly uneven cream against that engineering, and the flame keeps it from going soft.
Undyed White Flame does its best work with texture. Recipe one, soft neutrals: ecru wide leg trousers, a cream waffle knit, a tan canvas jacket, so the flame accent is the only saturated point in the outfit. Recipe two, wash denim: light indigo straight jeans, a white tee, an orange or rust beanie picking the accent back up. This is a maximal cushioning road shape, ideal for long walking days, easy runs and recovery, poor for court or trail. Size true and lock the heel with the final eyelet. Because the upper is undyed, spray it before first wear, clean marks quickly with a damp cloth rather than detergent, and dry away from sunlight so the cream stays even.
The Cloudmonster made On legible to people who do not run, which is how a fifteen year old company came to hold roughly 6.6 percent of the US performance running category. The brand's cultural entry was never subculture: triathlon, road running, the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein, then Roger Federer as a shareholder from November 2019 and collaborator on The Roger from July 2020, followed by a tennis roster including Iga Swiatek and Joao Fonseca from March 2023. An undyed colourway signals a different value again, material honesty, and it lands well on a shoe whose whole design premise is that you can see how it works.
CloudTec here is hexagonal, and On is precise about what those pods do: load energy on impact, unleash it at take off. It is a structural cushioning system, foam engineered into geometry, so the sensation comes from the cavities rather than from any single compound. The oversized Monster stack turns that into a long, soft landing with a firm, rolling finish. An undyed upper will not look identical pair to pair and will warm rather than yellow with wear, which is the point of leaving it undyed. Guard the flame accent from scuffing on kerbs. On designs in Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, so this is Swiss engineering, not Swiss manufacture.
