Culture Note™
Released on 17 March 2021 and part of On Running's Cloudvista line. This release has a mesh upper in Glacier/Black. Every On shoe traces back to a garden hose. Olivier Bernhard, a Swiss Ironman champion, cut one into sections and glued them to a sole in search of a single sensation: soft landing, hard take off. Nike passed on the idea, so he founded On in Zurich in 2010 with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti and turned the prototype into CloudTec. The Cloudvista sits in the all terrain half of the range, where the naming system does the explaining, and this women's pair runs Glacier Black: a pale, cold grey worked against black so the shoe reads clean at a distance and hides trail dust up close. It is the version of On that people buy for mixed ground rather than for a track split.
Glacier Black is the low maintenance end of the outdoor palette. Wear it with black technical leggings and a grey half zip for trail days and cold morning walks, or with straight leg jeans and an oversized charcoal knit when the shoe is just doing errands. The two tone split flatters ankle length hems because the pale upper lifts the eye. Expect a secure midfoot on uneven ground and take your usual running size, leaving a thumbnail of room at the toe for descents. After muddy use, knock the soles together, rinse the outsole only, and let them dry away from direct heat so the pods keep their shape. Never machine dry, and pull the insoles out to speed things up.
On did not arrive through music or subculture. It came through endurance sport: triathlon, road running, the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, sponsored runners like David Kilgore, even bobsleigh shoes built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Cloudracer of 2012, raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, set the template. What changed the audience was Federer taking equity in November 2019 and lending his name to The Roger in July 2020, followed by a tennis roster from March 2023. That crossover is why a grey and black all terrain shoe now reads as ordinary daywear as much as trail kit, and why the brand's meaning is closer to design object than to street.
CloudTec is the part you can see, and that is intentional. The pods on the outsole are the logo, engineered geometries rather than a slab of foam, compressing horizontally and vertically to absorb impact and give support in more than one direction through the stride. On an all terrain shape that matters most on uneven footing, where the load rarely arrives straight down. Glacier Black splits the job between the two tones: the light grey carries the upper and the black takes the ground contact and the wear points, which is a practical choice on gravel and wet paths. On designs in Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, and the finish quality is the argument the brand makes instead of heritage.
