Culture Note™
Part of On Running's Cloudwander line. This release has a synthetic upper in Navy/Desert. Cloudwander is On's hiking-leaning silhouette, and the women's waterproof version in Navy Desert is the one that argues hardest for wearing a running company's outdoor shoe instead of a boot. Navy against sand is a walking palette rather than a racing one: muted, earthy, easy to keep wearing when you get back to the car. On has been making this argument since 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, tested a hollow garden hose section glued to a sole because he wanted soft landings and firm take-offs in the same shoe. Applied to a trail, that idea becomes a shoe that lets you cover distance on foot without the weight and stiffness a traditional hiking boot asks for.
For hiking, wear it with cropped technical trousers or leggings in navy, a sand or cream base layer to echo the sole tones, and a light shell, with a proper wool hiking sock. For everyday, run it with wide beige chinos or a long utility skirt and a navy knit, which makes the outdoor shape read as considered rather than functional-by-accident. It is at its best on wet trails, gravel, travel days and cold weather walking, and least suited to hot summer runs. Wipe mud off while damp, brush grit out of the pods, and air dry away from heat sources so the membrane keeps working. Leave space for a thick sock when sizing.
On's move outdoors is credible because the company built its name in endurance sport before it built it anywhere else, from Swiss triathlon through the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein to bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. It is also a genuinely young company, founded in 2010, which shows in how little it borrows from traditional outdoor styling. A navy and sand waterproof hiker with visible pods on the outsole does not look like heritage gear, and that is intentional. The brand's cultural position today is design object more than trail traditionalist, which is why this shoe reads as well in a train station as on a ridge.
Waterproofing is the defining choice, and it comes with the usual trade: sealed against wet ground and rain, warmer and less breathable than mesh. The sole runs On's CloudTec, which the brand describes as a structural cushioning system rather than a foam, with pods engineered into specific geometries so they compress vertically and horizontally and give multi-directional support through the stride. On uneven ground that lateral compliance is what stops a cushioned shoe feeling tippy. The Navy Desert colourway pairs a dark upper with sand tones, which is forgiving with dust and dried mud in a way pale hikers never are. As a women's-specific make-up, expect a narrower midfoot and a slightly lower volume than the unisex fit.
