Designed by Kanye West and released on 11 October 2021 as part of the Yeezy 500 line. This release has a suede upper in Mist Stone/Mist Stone/Mist Stone. The 500 arrived in December 2017 as the heaviest, most grounded shape in the line, a wide, low slung silhouette that looked closer to a nineties hiking shoe than to anything the knit models were doing. The High version raises that body into a boot, wrapping the ankle and turning the design from a sneaker into a piece of outerwear for the foot. Mist Stone keeps it in the pale grey and sand register the line has always favoured, colours named after weather and material rather than fashion, which lets the volume of the silhouette read as sculptural instead of loud. It is one of the quieter shapes in a catalogue built on recognisable outlines.
Volume at the ankle needs a considered trouser. Recipe one: wide leg stone cargo trousers with the hem breaking on top of the collar, plus a heavy cream knit, an entirely tonal winter fit. Recipe two: dark straight leg denim tucked slightly into the ankle wrap, with a black puffer, where the pale boot becomes the only light element. Avoid cropped skinny trousers, which make the boot look detached from the leg. This is a cold weather, walking and travel shoe. Take your usual size and lace the ankle section snugly for support. Pale uppers mark easily, so brush after each wear, treat stains immediately with cold water, and use a suitable protector spray before first wear.
The 500 is the model that gave the line a boot language, and the High version is where that turned into genuine cold weather footwear rather than a styling exercise. It came from the same release culture the brand had made mainstream, where limited drops, bots, queues and resale determined who got what. The partnership behind it ended on 25 October 2022 when adidas terminated the deal following antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, stating the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values. Bulky earth toned boots remain one of the most copied ideas the line produced.
Where the knit models pull on like socks, the 500 High is built from layered upper materials over a heavy moulded midsole, with the collar extended to hold the ankle. The pale stone tones mean the layering is visible: you can see where one panel meets the next, which is unusual for a line that spent most of its life hiding seams inside one piece knits. The midsole is thick and softly rounded, carrying the weight of the design, and the outsole is grooved for grip. There is no exterior logo. Lacing runs high through the ankle section, so the fit can be tightened where a low top offers nothing.
