Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Bred
Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Bred
Culture Note™️
Origin
This is a shoe from a partnership adidas no longer has. The 350 V2 arrived in September 2016 as the second generation of a silhouette that had launched in June 2015 and been named Footwear News shoe of the year, and Bred is its most severe colourway: a black knit upper with a red side stripe and red lettering, a colour code borrowed from decades of sneaker shorthand for black and red. At the time the line was enormous, generating roughly 1.7 billion dollars a year by 2020, close to a tenth of adidas revenue. It is a resale-market object now rather than a current adidas line, and it should be understood that way.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. Black tapered joggers with a black hoodie, so the red stripe is the only colour and the shoe reads as a single continuous line. Or straight-cut raw denim with a grey crewneck and a black cap, where the Boost midsole is the visible contrast. The knit upper is comfortable on long days and the Boost sole is genuinely good for standing and walking. Size true to slightly down, since knit stretches. Keep the midsole clean with a soft brush and cold water, avoid soaking the knit, and store away from direct sunlight because Boost yellows with UV exposure.
Influence
The line's commercial scale was real and so was its ending. adidas terminated the partnership in October 2022 after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and his White Lives Matter shirt at Paris Fashion Week, stating that his comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. The company took a write-down of up to 250 million dollars and in February 2023 agreed to sell roughly 500 million dollars of remaining stock, with part of the proceeds going to organisations fighting hate. That context travels with the shoe. It is not a current adidas product and adidas does not present it as one.
Construction
A one-piece knit upper with a woven side stripe, a pull tab at the heel and a Boost midsole underneath. Boost is the material worth knowing here: a thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with German chemical company BASF and launched in its running range in 2013, made from thousands of fused TPU pellets whose bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the polymer itself. It returns more energy than standard EVA foam and behaves more consistently across temperatures, which is why it held up so well in a lifestyle shoe. The knit upper fits snugly and stretches with wear, and black hides everything except dust.
