    Culture Note™

Designed by Kanye West and released on 24 June 2021 as part of adidas's Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Cinder/Cinder/Cinder. The 350 V2 is a resale market object rather than a current adidas product. The Yeezy line ran from a partnership announced on 3 December 2013 and launched in February 2015, and adidas terminated it in October 2022 after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and his White Lives Matter shirt at Paris Fashion Week, stating that his comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. In February 2023 adidas agreed to sell roughly 500 million dollars of remaining inventory with part of the proceeds going to anti hate organisations. Mono Cinder is one of the single material greyscale executions from that run, a muted warm grey with no contrast striping at all.
Mono greys are the most wearable execution of this silhouette. Recipe one: full neutral, with grey or stone tapered trousers and a cream crew, so the shoe disappears into a tonal outfit and only the sole shape registers. Recipe two: all black clothing with the grey knit as the only lifted element, which sharpens the outline. Best for daytime and travel, since the open knit breathes well in heat but offers no weather protection at all. Sizing runs snug and narrow through the midfoot, so many wearers go up half a size. Clean the knit with a soft brush and mild soap only, and keep Boost midsoles out of prolonged direct sun.
The commercial scale of that partnership is documented: by 2020 it was generating about 1.7 billion dollars a year, roughly a tenth of adidas revenue. Its end cost the company a write down of up to 250 million dollars and a projected 1.3 billion dollar revenue hit. The honest way to read this shoe is as a closed chapter, not a live line. What outlasted it is the technology underneath, since Boost remains adidas's defining modern midsole across Ultraboost, NMD, Energy Boost, Pure Boost and adizero Adios Boost. adidas's current cultural work runs through other partners entirely, including Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny, Beyonce and an Original Forever collection with Oasis.
The Mono treatments differ from the standard 350 V2 in that the upper is a single open, mesh like knit rather than a two tone woven pattern with a side stripe, so the shoe reads as one continuous surface and is noticeably more breathable. Underneath sits Boost, adidas's thermoplastic polyurethane developed with German chemical company BASF and launched in adidas running in 2013, made from thousands of fused TPU pellets whose bounce comes from the processing rather than the raw polymer, giving higher energy return and steadier behaviour across temperatures than standard EVA. Cinder is a warm mid grey, which is one of the more practical tones for a knit upper since dust does not read against it.
