Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Zebra
Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Zebra
Culture Note™️
Origin
Zebra is the best known colourway of the 350 V2, a white and black striped knit upper with a red side text panel, and it belongs to a chapter adidas has closed. The Yeezy line ran from an announcement in December 2013 and a February 2015 launch through to October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and the White Lives Matter shirt shown at Paris Fashion Week, stating the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. This is not a current adidas line and will not return. What is left is a secondary market object and a technical record of what the brand's Boost era looked like at its commercial peak.
Utility
The striped upper is busy, so everything else should be plain. Black tapered joggers with a black hoodie lets the shoe be the only pattern in the outfit. Or straight cut mid grey trousers with a white tee, which picks up the white in the knit and keeps the red panel as a single accent. Boost is genuinely comfortable for long walking days and travel, which is where this pair earns its keep. Knit uppers pill and grey with wear: hand clean with a soft brush and mild soap, never machine wash, and keep Boost out of prolonged sun since exposed TPU yellows over time and cannot be bleached back.
Influence
At its height the line generated roughly 1.7 billion dollars a year, close to a tenth of adidas revenue. That scale is the honest reason the shoe is famous, and adidas has been explicit about why the relationship ended. The brand did not destroy the remaining stock: in February 2023 it agreed to sell roughly 500 million dollars of inventory with part of the proceeds directed to organisations fighting hate. Treat this pair as a Boost era artefact rather than as a live brand association, and understand that the design partner is not someone adidas associates itself with.
Construction
A knit upper in an irregular white and black stripe, with a printed side panel and a Boost midsole underneath. Boost is the substantive part: a thermoplastic polyurethane developed with German chemical company BASF and launched in adidas running in 2013, made from thousands of fused TPU pellets whose bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the polymer itself. It returns more energy than the industry standard EVA foam and stays more consistent across temperatures, which is why a shoe designed for looks still walks better than most. The knit upper is stretchy and sockike, so it accommodates a wider foot than the flat measurement suggests.
