Part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a synthetic upper in Black/Dark Sulphur/White/Chlorine Blue. Nike names its racing colours like paint swatches, and Dark Sulphur with Chlorine Blue is one of the sharper pairings it has run: a chemical yellow against a cold blue, applied to the Streakfly, the short distance racer built for 5k and 10k efforts. This is the unplated end of the modern racing range, where the priority is low weight and quick turnover rather than the rolling propulsion of a marathon shoe. The lineage is old even if the foam is new. Bill Bowerman started the company in 1964 because he thought American runners deserved lighter shoes, and a flat, minimal racer is the purest surviving version of that complaint.
Race short in it. Parkruns, 5k and 10k road races and track sessions are where the low stack and light upper earn their weight, worn with the thinnest technical socks you own. The second use is a weekly speed session in a training block, where the shoe encourages a cleaner, quicker foot strike. Take your usual race size and accept a snug fit with no spare room. Dark Sulphur is a genuine visibility advantage on early morning roads. Rotate with a cushioned trainer so the ZoomX recovers, air dry after wet runs rather than using heat, never machine wash, and retire them on foam feel rather than waiting for the upper to fail.
Nike's track roster is the reason its racing claims get taken seriously and examined hard: Steve Prefontaine as first track endorser with a statue at headquarters, then Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. When the company later paired ZoomX with a full length carbon plate in the 2017 Vaporfly, peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and World Athletics wrote rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm and permitting one rigid plate. An unplated racer like this sits well inside those limits and represents the part of the sport that never needed the argument.
Almost nothing to it, which is the point. A thin engineered mesh upper with minimal overlays sits over a ZoomX midsole, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive material in its range, run at a low stack so you keep contact with the road. Dark Sulphur covers the upper, which means the shoe stays visible in poor light, and Chlorine Blue handles the Swoosh and detailing so the shape has definition. Outsole rubber is applied only in the wear zones, a weight saving decision that traces straight back to Bowerman's waffle iron experiments, and it does mean the sole wears faster than a daily trainer's.
