Released on 1 December 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Carbon/Better Scarlet/Gum. The Samba began in 1949 as a problem solver, Adi Dassler building a football boot with suction cups set into the outsole so players could hold their footing on frozen winter pitches. It picked up the name Samba in 1950, tied to that year's World Cup in Brazil, where the grip technology it was designed around turned out to be completely unnecessary in the heat. The T-toe overlay that defines the shoe today arrived with the seventies redesign, alongside a flatter outsole and a lighter build that made it perfect for futsal courts across Europe. The Samba OG is the faithful retro of that lineage. This Carbon and Better Scarlet pair, style code IG6173, takes the near black base and lays one loud red line across it, so the shape reads classic while the colour refuses to.
Two recipes. One, straight leg black jeans with a grey crewneck and red socks or a red beanie flashing somewhere, so the Better Scarlet reads intentional rather than accidental. A blacked out leather upper carries the shoe, with the signature suede T-toe overlay in the same Carbon shade, so a texture shift handles the detailing before any colour arrives. Better Scarlet then lands exactly twice, on the serrated Three Stripes and on the leather heel tab, which is why the contrast hits as hard as it does against that dark ground. Gold foil printing on the foxing box label and the tongue Trefoil adds a little luxury without adding brightness. Underneath sits the low profile gum rubber sole the Samba has run since the fifties, flat enough to feel the ground through and grippy on smooth indoor floors. Leather up top means it holds its shape and cleans up faster than an all suede pair.
