Taxi, known to most people as the Yellow Toe, takes the Air Jordan 1 High and puts a saturated cab yellow on the toe box and heel against black and white. It is a colour idea rather than a heritage reissue, and it works because the AJ1 High is the most legible sneaker outline in existence. Peter Moore designed it with Bruce Kilgore for Michael Jordan after Nike signed him on 26 October 1984, the shoe was produced for him that November and released publicly on 1 April 1985, and the first 50,000 pairs sold out on the way past 150 million dollars in sales. Yellow on this pattern is a New York reference as much as a colour choice, and it reads instantly across a room.
Two ways to wear it. Let the yellow lead: black jeans, a black or grey crewneck, and nothing else bright, so the toe is the only colour in the fit. Or repeat it once: washed indigo denim, a cream overshirt, and a yellow detail at the wrist or cap, which keeps the shoe from looking like an accident. Highs want a slightly shorter or cuffed hem so the collar is visible, otherwise the whole point is hidden. Sizing is standard AJ1, close to true to size, roomy in the toe and snug across the midfoot. Protect the yellow panels before first wear, brush rather than soak them, and keep them away from wet ground because pale leather stains inward from the sole edge.
The Air Jordan 1 High is the shoe that taught the sneaker market transgression sells, through the Banned campaign built around the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and Nike's decision to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than change the design. It is also the shoe that made collecting a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. Aggressive colour blocking like this belongs to that lineage: the High is where Jordan Brand takes risks, which is why it has been handed to Off-White under Virgil Abloh, to Dior, to Supreme and to Travis Scott's Cactus Jack across the 1, 4 and 6.
The High gives you the full collar, so the leather upper wraps the ankle and the Wings logo sits high on the outside panel. Expect the usual panel layout: perforated toe box, separate mudguard, eyestay and heel counter, a padded collar, and a rubber cupsole with the pivot circle. Yellow leather is the least forgiving finish the AJ1 comes in, because it shows dirt at the toe crease and picks up dye transfer from dark denim, so the toe box is the panel you protect first. The High also creases differently to the Mid, folding lower and cleaner because the collar holds your ankle in place rather than letting the foot shift forward.
