Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 July 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black-Tour Yellow-White. Yellow Toe plays the oldest trick in the Air Jordan 1 catalogue: block the toe in a colour, leave the rest neutral, and let the eye do the rest. That idea comes from the 1985 shoe itself, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed a Bulls rookie in October 1984 on a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal with royalties attached. The Special Edition designation is the brand's licence to change materials and colour without touching the pattern. Here the change is a warm yellow on the toe and heel against a pale body, which reads as a summer version of a formula usually done in red.
Yellow is a warm accent, so treat it as one point of colour. First: off white or ecru wide leg trousers, a plain white tee, a denim shirt worn open, socks in white so the pale body of the shoe extends up the leg. Second: mid blue straight jeans with a single cuff and a navy crewneck, letting the yellow toe sit against blue for maximum separation. Occasion is daytime and warm weather. Fit is true to size with a narrow midfoot. Care: protector spray before the first wear because pale panels and yellow both stain, soft brush the perforations, damp cloth only, and dry away from heat.
Toe blocking became meaningful because of what the original red version stood for. The Banned advertising was built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring shoes to be at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, and it taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shape into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried it into records. A yellow toe borrows that grammar and drains the aggression out of it.
You are getting the 1 Mid pattern in leather: wing tip toe with perforations for airflow, a separate eyestay, a stitched Swoosh panel and a padded collar that sits just under the ankle bone, all over a rubber cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle. Blocking the yellow at the toe puts the strongest colour on the panel that flexes hardest, so crease lines will appear there before anywhere else, and the pale quarters are what you will actually spend time cleaning. The Mid collar carries more foam than an OG High, which is why it is comfortable straight out of the box rather than after a break in period.
