Part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in White/Dark Red. White with dark red is one of the oldest sportswear pairings there is, and on the 327 it does something specific: it turns the oversized block N into a graphic mark rather than a logo. The 327 is New Balance's most deliberately designed silhouette, taking archive running proportions and stretching them, and this women's build keeps the shape crisp while running a deep red against a clean base. The company began in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, an orthopaedic business rather than a fashion one, which is why even its boldest colour work sits on a shoe that behaves. Contrast this sharp works because the silhouette underneath is disciplined.
Utility
High contrast wants a simple frame. Recipe one: white straight jeans, a navy tee and a red detail somewhere small, a bag strap or a cap, so the shoe's second colour finds an echo. Recipe two: black cropped trousers, a white shirt and a leather jacket, letting the red act as the only warm note in a cold outfit. Best for dry city days, casual work environments and travel, and not built for rain given the white base. Check the width fitting on a slim shoe. Clean the white panels early and often, use a soft brush on mesh, avoid soaking and never machine wash, and air dry out of direct sun.
Influence
The brand's fashion standing was earned in reverse. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, plain and grey, worn by Steve Jobs and later by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s. Once the archive became a design language, New Balance started drawing new shoes in it, and the 327 is the clearest example. A high contrast white and dark red build reads as sportswear graphics rather than heritage reproduction, which is the point of the model. In April 2021 the company appointed Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis to lead Made in USA, confirming the archive as a fashion line rather than a museum.
Construction
The white base does the structural reading and the dark red does the pointing, marking out the N and the panel edges so the shoe's geometry stays visible from a distance. Surfaces mix panelled sections with mesh, so the same colour changes character depending on the material carrying it. The 327 runs low and light rather than heavily cushioned, which places it in the walking rather than standing category. New Balance's cushioning systems set the brand's baseline, ENCAP layering a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core for structure and low compression set, and ABZORB dispersing heel strike as a foam and rubber polymer blend. Width fittings run through the range, a habit carried from the arch support years.
