Released on 22 November 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Grey Matter/Concrete/December Sky. Grey Purple, Grey Matter and December Sky: three greys with different temperatures stacked on one shoe, which is a very New Balance way to spend a colourway. Grey is this brand's home ground. The 990 family turned the grey suburban running shoe into an American default, and everything the company has done since has treated grey as a material rather than a fallback. The 9060 takes the 99x line's premium heritage, which runs from the 990 in 1982 through the 991, 992 and 993, and inflates it into something more sculptural. Here that shape is rendered in cool purple leaning greys with a lighter sky tone breaking it up, so the panelling reads as depth rather than decoration. The code U9060GM marks it.
Utility
Two recipes. Charcoal wide leg trousers with a white tee and a grey overshirt gives you a full tonal fit where the shoe is the most detailed element, which is how tonal greys are meant to work. Or ecru straight leg jeans with a black knit, where the greys bridge the two and the purple cast keeps things warm. This is a walking, weekend and travel shoe, and it needs a trouser with enough width to sit over the sole, since narrow hems make a heavy silhouette look bottom heavy. Buy true to length and use the width fittings if you have a broad foot. Brush the lighter panels dry, treat marks the day they land, and keep it away from standing water so the pale sections do not tide mark.
Influence
That plain grey New Balance became a fashion object is the accident the brand has learned to farm. The 990 line was worn for comfort and not status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion in the 2010s reclaimed exactly that plainness as a design stance. Grey suede became a position rather than a default. A three tone grey 9060 is the mature version of that idea: it does not need a bright colourway to be noticed, because in this house grey has been the signal for decades and everyone downstream now reads it fluently.
Construction
Tonal greys are the hardest thing to build well, because with no colour contrast the shape has to carry everything. That is why this works on the 9060 rather than on a flat runner: layered overlays, a deep sculpted side wall and a midsole with enough shaping to throw shadow, so the three greys separate into planes as light moves across them. The purple cast in the darker panels keeps it from going grey on grey dull. Underfoot, this house has been building structure and shock absorption into midsoles since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft foam core so the two materials split the work. Expect weight, expect stability, and expect the lighter December Sky panels to be the first thing that shows city dirt.
