Designed by Eric Avar and released on 30 October 2025 as part of the Kobe 9 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Hyper Grape/White/Cave Purple. Protro is Nike's word for a returning model rebuilt with current technology rather than reissued as it was, and the Kobe 9 Elite Low is one of the more radical shapes in the company's basketball catalogue to receive that treatment. Moonwalker takes the shoe somewhere off the court entirely, into the pale, dusty, low contrast register of lunar imagery rather than team colour. That is a deliberate refusal of the usual basketball palette logic. Nike has been the on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, so the brand can afford to make a shoe that ignores franchise colours completely, because it already owns the ones that do not.
Recipe one, off court: grey wide leg trousers, a washed cream hoodie, nothing else with a logo, so the chalky palette on the shoe is the only texture doing work. Recipe two: black tapered trousers and a black long sleeve, using the pale upper as the single point of contrast in an otherwise dark outfit. On court, play in it indoors only: this is a low cut elite shoe with minimal upper material, so it prioritises court feel and lockdown over ankle coverage. Fit snug, laces firm, no heel slip. Muted finishes stain, so wipe them after every wear, keep them off wet pavements, and never machine wash a Flywire upper.
Nike's grip on basketball began with the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, which made the company the shoe of the sport and then of hip hop through it. From the 1980s onward Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models functioned as status objects in urban and hip hop fashion before becoming ordinary casual wear in the 1990s and 2000s. Nike's current signature roster includes LeBron James and Kevin Durant. A themed elite low like this one is aimed at the part of that audience that follows performance product as design rather than as equipment, which is now most of it.
A low cut elite basketball build using Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole that has been the company's cushioning platform since the technology became a visible design feature from the 1987 Air Max onward, alongside Flywire, which uses cables to hold the foot with minimal upper material. Flywire is what allows an elite basketball shoe to be this light without losing lockdown: the cables take the load so the upper does not have to be thick. The Protro rebuild means current generation materials rather than a faithful reissue. The Moonwalker finish sits in muted, chalky tones, which will read beautifully indoors and pick up marks quickly anywhere else.
