Released on 6 May 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Light Yellow/Light Yellow/Light Yellow. The Samba is an indoor football shoe, built low and flat so a player could feel the ball through the sole, and it became one of the most quietly influential shapes adidas ever put out. Pharrell Williams, a long running designer collaborator with the brand, has spent his adidas work arguing that colour is a design tool rather than a finishing decision, and Human Race is the line where that argument is made hardest. Yellow on a Samba is a genuine provocation: this is a silhouette that spent decades in black with white stripes and a gum sole, worn by people who did not want to be looked at. Saturating it in a single high frequency tone changes the shoe's entire social function.
Two routes. Let it be the only colour: black or charcoal wide trousers, a grey knit, everything else muted, and the shoe reads as intentional rather than costume. Or double down: cream trousers with a pale blue shirt, where yellow becomes part of a summer palette instead of an interruption. Best for daytime, warm weather, festivals and travel. Sambas run narrow and slightly long, so most people go half a size down, though wide feet should stay true and expect the suede to give. Yellow suede is the hardest finish to keep clean in sneakers, so spray it with a suede protector before wearing, brush dry with a crepe or rubber suede brush, and never use water and soap directly, which will stain a pale dye in rings.
adidas built the template for the modern designer sneaker partnership, running from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney's work from 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons, Alexander Wang and Pharrell Williams. Human Race is Pharrell's most personal contribution to that group, colour first and unapologetically loud, and putting it on the Samba connects it to the terrace and casual dressing tradition that made Originals a lifestyle business in the first place. The Samba was never a hype shoe by design. It became one because people who cared about how they dressed kept choosing it, and a yellow pair is a bet that the shape is strong enough to survive being shouted.
A Samba is defined by what it does not have. There is no visible cushioning technology, no engineered upper, just a low profile shoe with a suede toe overlay for durability at the point where a football makes contact, the Three Stripes stitched along the flank as reinforcement, and a flat outsole that keeps you close to the ground. In yellow, the usual contrast structure of the model dissolves. You stop reading stripes against a base and start reading form, seam lines and material change, since suede and leather take the same dye very differently and matte against sheen becomes the only tonal separation left on the shoe.
