Released on 28 May 2024 and part of On Running's Cloud X 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Ice/Auburn. The Cloud X line is On's answer to the days that are not just running: mixed sessions, movement in more than one direction, work that changes pace. The third generation is the version that settled that idea, and Ice Auburn gives it an unusual palette, a cold pale base warmed by a deep reddish brown, which is closer to an autumn wardrobe than to gym kit. Underneath, the argument is the one Olivier Bernhard made in Zurich in 2010 by gluing sections of a cut garden hose to a sole: a hollow shape can be soft when you land on it and firm when you leave it. This is the women's build, cut close and low in volume.
A two tone trainer with a warm accent is easier to wear than a plain one. Recipe one: black cropped leggings, a cream long sleeve and a rust cap, where the auburn tone is repeated once and the ice tone keeps it light. Recipe two: khaki straight trousers, a white tee and a brown leather jacket, an off duty look where the shoe is the technical detail. Use them for mixed training, classes, walking and busy days on your feet, and keep them off wet trails. Fit true to size with a snug midfoot for lateral hold. Brush the pale sections dry, clean marks the same day, and air the upper fully after training.
On is a Swiss company designed in Zurich with production in Indonesia and Vietnam, and its cultural position is engineering as aesthetic rather than membership of a scene. It reached that position through endurance sport, then through Roger Federer's equity stake in November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020, then through a tennis roster that includes Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca from March 2023 and Flavio Cobolli from June 2024. A versatile trainer sits comfortably in that story: court adjacent, gym adjacent, street ready, and recognisable from the outsole before anyone reads a logo.
On describes CloudTec as a structural cushioning system, foam engineered into specialised geometries so the cavities compress horizontally as well as vertically. That horizontal compression is exactly what matters on a shoe meant for varied movement, because it delivers multi directional support rather than only cushioning a straight line landing. It is not a foam and calling it one misses the point. Ice Auburn splits maintenance sensibly: the auburn takes the contact and the ice keeps the geometry visible, so you can keep it looking sharp with a brush and a mild foam cleaner rather than a deep clean. Clear the pod cavities when grit collects.
