Culture Note™
Released on 4 October 2025 and part of the AE 2 line. This release has a textile upper in Acid Orange/Core Black/Acid Red. The AE line is adidas's current signature basketball programme, and With Love is the version that stops pretending a performance shoe has to look severe. adidas has been building court shoes since the Superstar arrived in 1969 with a rubber shell toe designed to protect players' feet under the basket, a shoe worn by a reported 75 percent of NBA players by 1973 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters. Modern signature shoes inherit that job, then add a personality. With Love is a themed colourway, warm rather than aggressive, and it makes the AE 2 read as a statement about how the game is played now: expressive, unbothered, openly emotional in a sport that used to punish that.
On court: play them as intended with performance socks, and lace fully through the top eyelets so the heel stays locked during lateral movement. Off court: baggy denim, a warm neutral hoodie and the shoe as the only piece with any colour in it, or black track pants with a plain tee so the With Love palette reads as an intentional accent. They suit gym sessions, weekend games and casual wear where you want volume underfoot. Buy true to size and try them with the socks you actually play in. Rotate pairs if you hoop regularly, wipe the outsole before indoor sessions for traction, and keep the graphic panels away from harsh detergents.
adidas basketball has always travelled beyond the court. The Superstar was adopted wholesale by hip hop and gave adidas a second life the company did not design, and the brand's court shoes have carried cultural weight ever since. James Harden is a signature basketball athlete for adidas, which places the AE programme inside a lineage of players given their own design language rather than a team template. A themed colourway like With Love is aimed at that audience: people who follow basketball as culture, who read a shoe's story as closely as its traction, and who wear signature models off court more often than on it.
This is a performance basketball shoe first, so read the build for containment rather than decoration. adidas court design has always started with the same principle that made the shell toe famous: reinforce the part of the shoe that takes the abuse. The Three Stripes carry that logic too, since adidas bought the mark in 1952 and used it as a stitched structural element across the upper. Expect a supportive heel, a wide stable platform and an outsole pattern built for hard stops and lateral cuts. The themed With Love finish means colour and print sit on surfaces that will crease, so if you plan to actually hoop in these, accept the creasing as part of the deal and clean the midsole rather than the graphics.
