Part of the Jabbar line. This release has a fur upper in Supplier Colour/Cream White/Gum. This model carries Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's name, and that name matters more in adidas history than almost any other. He was an early Superstar wearer who popularised the shell toe in the NBA, in the period when that shoe was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973 and the rubber shell toe became the brand's most copied silhouette detail. The high top version of his signature model is a proper basketball shape from that era, tall, structured and built for the paint. Cow Print is the modern intervention, covering that archive silhouette in an animal pattern that has nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with being looked at.
A patterned high top is the loudest thing in any outfit, so build around it. Recipe one: black straight jeans with a plain black tee and a white sock breaking at the collar, letting the print be the only pattern anywhere. Recipe two: grey sweatpants cuffed above the ankle with a solid crewneck, so the collar and print stay fully visible rather than being swallowed by fabric. Printed and textured uppers should be brushed dry and spot cleaned with foam, never soaked, since water can lift a surface treatment. Keep it out of sun to stop the print fading. Lace it to the top of the collar, which is what a high top is for.
adidas basketball is the foundation of the brand's cultural life. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin were early Superstar wearers, the shoe took over the league, and then hip hop adopted it wholesale, giving adidas a second life it never designed. That second life became formal in 1986, when Run-DMC released My Adidas without a commission and then held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden, leading to the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. A signature high top from that basketball archive, printed rather than colour blocked, is aimed at the descendants of that street adoption rather than at players.
A high top basketball build means a tall collar with padding around the ankle, a reinforced heel counter and a full lacing run that lets you tighten from the toe to the top of the collar. That is support architecture from a period before lightweight materials, so expect the shoe to feel structured rather than soft. The Three Stripes appear as structural banding, which is how adidas has used the mark since acquiring it from Karhu Sports in 1952. The Cow Print sits across the upper panels as a printed or textured surface treatment rather than as a colour block, which means the pattern, not the panelling, is what the eye follows from any distance.
