Released on 20 August 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Night Navy/Cream White/Gum. Adi Dassler built the Samba in 1949 to solve a boring problem: footballers could not stay upright on frozen winter pitches. He put gum rubber with suction cups under a leather boot and reinforced the toe with a suede panel, the T-toe you still see. The name was pure marketing, borrowed from Brazil ahead of the 1950 World Cup, which is how a German winter trainer ended up carrying a Brazilian dance on its side. It started mid-cut for ankle support and dropped low as futsal took over indoor courts. Night Navy Gum is the version that behaves like a navy blazer: dark enough to sit under anything, warmed by the gum sole so it never reads corporate. It is the Samba people buy second, once black and white is already in the rotation.
Two fits that work. Straight or slightly cropped indigo denim with a white tee and a navy or grey overshirt, keeping the shoe in one tonal family while the gum sole warms it up. The Samba moved from sports halls to football terraces through British casuals in the seventies and eighties, then into indie culture in the nineties alongside Oasis and Trainspotting. Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean all pushed it back into fashion, Grace Wales Bonner's partnership gave it luxury credibility, and blokecore turned it into a uniform on TikTok. That made the Samba one of the defining sneakers of the decade, and it also made the loud colorways feel crowded. Night Navy Gum is the counter-move: same shoe, same lineage, none of the noise. Leather upper with suede overlays, so the shoe holds its shape through daily wear instead of creasing into a bag.
