    Culture Note™

    Origin

Bruce Kilgore drew the Air Force 1 in 1982 and named it after the presidential aircraft. It was the first basketball shoe to carry Nike Air, a sealed pocket of pressurised air in the heel, and Nike claimed it cushioned shock 30 percent better and ran 20 percent more resilient than a standard shoe. Kilgore lifted the lowered heel collar from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach, because hikers needed their Achilles left alone. Nike killed the model in 1984. Three Baltimore stores, Charley Rudo, Cinderella Shoes and Downtown Locker Room, refused to let it go and talked Nike into exclusive runs under a Color of the Month programme. The all white version came later and quietly became the one everybody actually wears. Triple White, style code CW2288-111, is the silhouette stripped to nothing.

    Utility

Two ways to wear Triple White. Everyday: straight leg or baggy denim, plain white tee, hoodie or overshirt, with the hem stacked just onto the sole, which is exactly why this pair moves year round. Sharper: cropped black trousers or wide chinos with a knit polo, where the all white sole cuts clean against dark fabric for a dinner or a first day at work. On fit, Air Force 1s run large, so go half a size down from your usual Nike size. Wide feet, stay true to size, because the toe box is roomy and sizing down leaves your toes cramped after a few hours. Expect a real break-in week while the leather relaxes. Wipe the leather after every wear, keep an eraser sponge for the midsole, and dry them in shade, since sun is what yellows white soles.

    Influence

The Air Force 1 stopped being a basketball shoe decades ago. In Harlem it earned the nickname Uptowns, and the white on white version, which landed in the late nineties, is the one hip hop genuinely adopted. In 1988 DJ E-Z Rock appeared on an album cover in a pair customised by Harlem's Dapper Dan with Louis Vuitton branding, one of the first real collisions of street and luxury, an idea Virgil Abloh closed the loop on with the Louis Vuitton x Nike AF1 project. Nelly's 2002 track turned the shoe into an anthem for a silhouette Nike had nearly discontinued. Roc-A-Fella, Shady Records and Terror Squad all got logos on limited AF1 heels. By 2007 the model spanned over 1,700 colour variations and roughly 800 million dollars a year.

    Construction

    chevron
White leather over a white midsole over a white outsole, and the entire appeal is that there is nothing competing for attention. The upper is leather, stiff on day one and softening as it moulds to your foot, with perforations across the toe panel for airflow. Cushioning is deliberately old school: a thin foam insole and a small Air unit sitting inside the rubber midsole, which is why the ride feels planted and dense rather than springy. That density is the whole character of the shoe. The chunky cupsole gives the Air Force 1 Low its weight and the wide, flat footprint that makes it sit so well under denim. On the laces you get the AF-1 '82 medallion, the only ornament on the entire build.
