Part of the SL72 line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Cream White/Gum. The number in the name points at the year, and 1972 was a significant one for adidas: the Trefoil, designed in 1971, launched for the Munich Olympics and went on to carry the brand until 1997 before becoming the mark of adidas Originals. The SL 72 belongs to that period of running design, a light, narrow, sharply pointed shape from before running shoes became engineering projects. Core Black with Cream White is the version that reads most like an archive pull: dark body, off-white sole and trim, nothing bright anywhere. It is the opposite proposition to a modern adizero, and that is the appeal.
Utility
Two ways. Straight-cut dark denim with a black knit and a tan jacket, letting the cream sole tie into the outerwear. Or cream wide trousers with a black tee, inverting the shoe's own palette across the outfit. It suits daytime, travel and dry weather, and it is genuinely light for long walking, though the thin sole means less cushioning than a modern runner. Construction
A lightweight retro runner build in suede and textile panelling with a slim heel, a low wedge-style sole and the Three Stripes running the sidewall. adidas originally stitched those stripes on to reinforce the upper, and on a shoe this light the reinforcement matters more than it does on a padded modern trainer. Cream sole and trim against a black upper is a deliberate ageing effect: the sole is already the colour a white one would become. Underfoot it is thin and flat by modern standards, so it is a walking shoe rather than a running one now. The fit is narrow, particularly through the toe.
