Released on 19 March 2021 and part of the Terrex Free Hiker line. This release has a primeknit upper in Black/Black/Black. Terrex is adidas outdoors, the division where the company's engineering habits get tested against weather rather than stopwatches. The Free Hiker was the model that argued a hiking boot did not have to be built like a rigid shell, borrowing the sock like upper and the Boost midsole from running and putting them on a lugged outsole. Pharrell Williams, a long standing adidas designer collaborator, took that platform and reduced it to Triple Black, removing every contrast panel that normally tells you which part of a hiking boot does what. Style code GZ9820. Stripped of colour coding, the shape reads as sculpture, which is exactly the trick that made Pharrell's adidas work register with people who never hike.
Utility
It genuinely hikes, so use it for day walks on mixed ground and travel days where you want one pair that handles both. In town, wear it with tapered black trousers or cargos cuffed just above the collar so the sock fit is visible, with an overshirt or a shell on top. The second route is full black technical: nylon trousers, a black midlayer, everything in one tone so the lugs and the zip pull are the only detail. Size true to your running size, since the last comes from that side of the business. After trail use, brush the outsole clear, wipe the upper and dry it away from radiators, because heat damages both the Boost midsole and the bonded upper.
Influence
adidas invented the modern designer sneaker partnership and then kept extending it, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney since 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, into music with Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. Pharrell's contribution has been consistently about softening technical adidas product into something wearable in a city, and the Free Hiker Zip is that approach applied to the outdoor division rather than to running or archive silhouettes. Triple black is the version of that idea with no explanation attached. It works in the same way a technical jacket works in town: the capability is real, but the reason you are wearing it is the shape.
Construction
The Free Hiker's case rests on Boost, the thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with the German chemical company BASF and launched in 2013, made from thousands of fused TPU pellets whose bounce comes from the processing rather than the raw polymer. It returns more energy than standard EVA and, importantly for a boot, holds its behaviour across temperatures instead of stiffening in the cold. Above it sits a high, stretchy collar with a zip closure, which is the detail that makes this version quicker to get into than a laced hiker. The lugged outsole handles loose ground. In all black, the upper hides trail dust well but shows salt marks and water staining, so it wants drying at room temperature rather than near heat.
