Culture Note™
Released on 4 October 2024 and part of the Vento XLG line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Red. adidas has never been shy about volume. The company that sold the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor doing five million calculations a second, and that put splayed blades under springblade instead of foam, has always liked a sole you can see from across a room. The Vento XLG Deluxe is that instinct pointed at lifestyle rather than performance: an exaggerated runner shape with a stacked, sculpted sole and a layered upper. This White and Red pair is the loud version. White keeps the bulk visually light so the shoe does not read as heavy, and the red runs through the branding and overlays as the accent that gives the silhouette its edge.
Two recipes. Wide cargo trousers in stone or black with a boxy white tee, letting the sole do the whole silhouette job and the red read as a punctuation mark. Or a tracksuit in grey with a red cap picking up the accent, which is the most straightforward way to make a maximal shoe look intentional. It is a going-out and daytime-city shoe rather than a distance walker. Size true; the volume is in the sole, not the fit. Clean white uppers early rather than late, use a soft brush on the mesh, and wipe the sole edge with a damp cloth after each wear to stop scuffs setting.
The chunky runner returned as a whole category and adidas had the archive to meet it without inventing anything, because it had been building maximal, mechanically expressive shoes for decades. That credibility is not accidental. Under Robert Louis-Dreyfus between 1994 and 2001 adidas quadrupled revenue to 5.84 billion euros and rebuilt itself as a marketing company, which is how a technical experiment becomes a fashion category. A white and red XLG is a deliberately visible shoe, aimed at people dressing around footwear rather than under it. The white and red build is aimed squarely at people who want the shoe to be the first thing anyone notices, and it is honest about that rather than pretending to be subtle.
A layered mixed-material upper, suede and mesh panelling over a synthetic base, sitting on an oversized moulded sole unit with a wide platform footprint. The Three Stripes appear as applied overlay panels rather than thin banding, scaled up to match the sole, which is the same structural principle adidas has used since it began stitching stripes on to hold uppers in place. White across the body means the sole edge is the most exposed surface, so it will pick up scuffs first. The build sits taller than a classic Originals low, so expect a slightly different stride feel and give yourself a day to adjust.
