Origin
Released on 1 April 2023 and part of the adiFOM Q line. This release has a eva upper in Dash Grey/Light Grey/Bright Royal. The Adifom Q is adidas in its experimental register, a moulded, sculptural shoe that argues with the idea of what a sneaker outline should be. The company has a long habit of this. The adidas 1 of 2005 was sold as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second to adjust its own cushioning, and springblade replaced foam with splayed blades. None of those were sensible products and all of them were the point, because adidas periodically builds something to prove it can. The Adifom Q belongs to that lineage rather than to the archive lineage of the Trefoil marked Originals classics, which is why it reads as an object first and as footwear second. Style code GW2216 identifies this build.
Utility
Wear this the way you would wear a clog, as a deliberate silhouette rather than a background one. Run it with a wide leg trouser that breaks over the top, cropped just enough to show the moulded edge, and a plain heavy tee so the shoe is the only shape in play. The second use is simpler, a slip on for short trips, studio work and travel days where you are taking shoes on and off repeatedly. Wear a thicker sock, since foam against bare skin gets sweaty fast. Clean it with mild soap and a cloth, and keep it out of direct sun and hot cars, because moulded foam warps permanently once it softens.
Influence
adidas has spent decades handing silhouettes to designers to be pulled out of shape: Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line, Stella McCartney since 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. That programme effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership, and it changed what adidas was allowed to put on a shelf. The moulded, non traditional shoe is the in house version of the same permission: once the brand had trained its audience to accept a sneaker as a design object, it could sell one with no laces, no panels and no visible stripes at all and still have it read as adidas.
Construction
A moulded foam shoe is a single piece problem rather than an assembly problem: there are no panels, no stitching and no stripe overlays, so the entire identity has to come out of the mould geometry and the colour split. That is why the shading matters more here than it would on a leather shoe. Foam construction means very light weight, a soft and slightly unstable underfoot feel, and a fit that does not break in the way leather does, so what it feels like on the first wear is roughly what it will always feel like. It is also warm, since moulded foam does not breathe. The colourway string on this listing is a compressed abbreviation dump rather than readable colour names.
