Adios Pro 4 is the fourth generation of adidas's marathon racing shoe, and the number matters more than usual here because each generation has changed the rod geometry rather than just the colour. The line's ancestry runs through the adizero Adios Boost, one of the shoes that carried Boost after the material launched in adidas running in 2013, and before that to the original reason adidas exists: Adolf Dassler building event specific shoes in Herzogenaurach for athletes he watched, and the brothers putting handmade spikes on sprinter Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Nothing in this shoe is heritage styling. It is the current answer to a single question, which is how fast a person can be moved over 42 kilometres.
Utility
Race in these and sharpen in them, nothing else. Recipe one: a goal marathon or half, worn with thin technical socks and a race kit that does not need breaking in, having already run at least two race pace efforts in the shoe. The super shoe era changed what a personal best means, and adidas argued its corner with rods rather than a plate, a genuinely different engineering position rather than a variation on a competitor's. That habit of chasing engineering spectacle is old: adidas marketed the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning, and springblade replaced foam with splayed blades. The Adios Pro is the serious, unshowy version of the same instinct. Among Indian marathoners it functions as a signal of a training block that has an actual goal attached, which is why it appears in start pens rather than on commutes.
Construction
The adizero racing platform uses a thermoplastic polyester elastomer midsole with carbon rods embedded in it rather than one continuous carbon plate, so stiffness is distributed under the individual metatarsals instead of applied across the whole forefoot. That preserves some natural foot splay while still snapping the shoe forward at toe off. The upper is stripped to a light engineered mesh with minimal overlays and a thin tongue, because a racing shoe carries nothing it does not need. Everything sits high off the ground compared with a heritage adidas trainer, which is what makes the ride feel unstable at walking pace and stable at speed. The outsole rubber is placed only where a fast runner actually lands.
