Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 11 December 2020 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Black/Black/Black. The Air Force 1 is the shoe Nike stopped trying to improve, because from the 1980s onward it was already a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion and the surest way to ruin it was to redesign it. What Nike does instead is hand it over. This Low is a Stussy pair in triple black, meaning the collaborator gets the silhouette intact and works only in material and tone. Removing colour entirely is the most confident move available on an AF1: no contrast panels, no Swoosh separation, nothing to read from across a street. You are left with shape, surface and stitching, which is precisely what the AF1 has always been.
All-black AF1s are the most versatile shoe in this list and the easiest to under-dress. Recipe one: black wide-leg trousers with a full break, a black crewneck, and a charcoal wool overcoat, a full tonal column where the shoe supplies weight at the bottom. Recipe two: raw indigo denim cuffed once, a white tee and a black leather jacket, letting the black sole cut hard against the blue. Air Force 1s run about half a size large, so size down half for a clean fit. Black leather shows dust and salt rather than dirt, so wipe with a barely damp cloth and condition occasionally, and never use whitening products anywhere near a triple black midsole.
Air Force 1s, Air Jordans and Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s, then reappeared in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, and the AF1 in particular became less a Nike product than a shared civic object. Triple black is that object at its most functional: the version worn by people who wear the shoe every day rather than photograph it. Stussy's involvement places it in the lineage of Nike partnerships that route the brand through subculture rather than sport, the same territory Nike SB was operating in when its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike.
Triple black means the leather, the Swoosh, the midsole, the outsole and the lace dubrae all sit in the same tone, so the shoe is judged entirely on material quality and panel geometry. Collaborator builds on this silhouette typically upgrade the hide, and the absence of contrast makes any difference in grain, sheen or nap immediately obvious in raking light. Underneath it stays a standard Air Force 1 Low: a thick cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle, a moulded padded collar, and Nike Air sealed inside the midsole as a pressurised gas unit, hidden rather than exposed the way it became on the 1987 Air Max. The ride is flat, heavy and protective, closer to a boot than a runner.
