Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 15 February 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in Fire Red/Fire Red/Cement Grey/Black. The Air Jordan 3 is the hinge of the whole line. Nike handed design to Tinker Hatfield after the first two models, and the III is where a basketball shoe became a design series with its own language: the elephant print arrived here, and the Jumpman moved onto the tongue. The Jumpman itself came from Peter Moore having Jordan recreate a split legged leap in Bulls gear. This Retro SE Unite version takes that architecture and pushes it into a red dominant Special Edition treatment, so the grey cracked print reads as a graphic accent against colour rather than as the shoe's main event. Red and grey print wants a quiet outfit. First: raw denim in a straight leg with a single cuff, a grey marl sweatshirt that echoes the elephant panels, white socks kept short. Second: black cargo trousers with the hem stacked over the collar, a black bomber, so only the toe and heel print show as you walk. Occasion is casual and social; the mid cut is comfortable standing for hours. Fit is true to size with a slightly roomy toe box compared with the 1. Care: the print panels take a soft brush and nothing wet, the smooth red leather takes a damp cloth and a conditioner, and stuffing the toe box between wears slows the crease.
Elephant print is the most recognisable material code in the brand and now signals Jordan on its own, without a logo. That is a rare thing for a texture to achieve, and it happened because the 3 landed during the years when Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoes into film language and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z wrote them into records. A red Unite version leans on that recognition: you do not need the tongue logo visible for the shoe to be read correctly. It is a collector's silhouette worn as everyday footwear.
The 3 is built on a mid cut leather upper with the elephant print applied at the toe and heel, the two places where the pattern is structurally useful as a scuff surface as well as a signature. The tongue carries the Jumpman, the collar is padded and cut lower than the 1's, and the lace loops sit on a reinforced eyestay. Nike Air cushioning has run in the line since the Air Jordan II and sits under a rubber outsole here. The red SE panels are smooth leather, which takes creasing across the toe box as the shoe flexes, so the print sections stay cleaner than the plain ones over time.
