Air Jordan 3 Retro White/Metallic Copper-True Blue
Air Jordan 3 Retro White/Metallic Copper-True Blue
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 1 August 2009 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has the White/True Blue colourway. White with metallic copper and true blue is the 3 in its dress version. The model matters more than the colour here: the Air Jordan III is where Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield, where the elephant print arrived, and where the Jumpman moved onto the tongue. Everything the brand later did with recognisable material codes starts from that shoe. On a white base, the grey cracked print reads softer than it does against black, the copper adds a metal note the line rarely uses, and the true blue keeps the whole thing from turning into a wedding shoe. It is the 3 for people who already own the obvious one.
Utility
Two recipes. First, off white or stone trousers with a navy knit, letting the true blue in the shoe answer the top half and the copper act as jewellery. Second, black jeans and a white shirt, a hard contrast fit where the shoe is the only textured thing you are wearing. The 3 has bulk, so keep the hem straight and clearing the midsole rather than tapered. This is a dry weather, evening pair: white plus metallic is not a monsoon combination. Brush the print dry, clean the white the same day it marks, and keep the metallic areas away from abrasive cleaners.
Influence
The 3 is the model that proved a sneaker could be recognised by its texture from across a room, and elephant print has since escaped the shoe entirely to become a brand signal on its own, appearing across apparel and collaborations with partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. It also belongs to the Spike Lee era, when Lee directed Nike's advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and to the years hip hop wrote Jordans permanently into music through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z.
Construction
Three surfaces, three jobs. The white panels carry the volume, the elephant print handles toe and heel as a separate textured material, and the metallic copper is a small area detail that catches light and does the work a bright colour would otherwise do. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the II and the 3's moulded midsole gives a fuller, more supportive ride than a flat cupsole model. A white base is the demanding part: it picks up dust, denim transfer and road grime, and the textured print traps dirt in its cracks. Dry brush the print before any wet cleaning, and protect the whole upper before first wear.
