Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 29 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Midnight Navy/Light Smoke Grey/Fire Red. The Air Jordan 4 is where Tinker Hatfield's grip on the line is most obvious. Handed the series from the Air Jordan III onward, he turned a leather basketball shoe into an engineered object with visible hardware, and the 4 is the clearest statement of that: netting, lace wings, a moulded heel. Midnight Navy is a deep blue that behaves like black at a distance and reveals itself in daylight, which suits a model whose appeal is in its structure rather than its colour. This is the grade school version, scaled rather than redesigned, which means younger feet get the same panel architecture the adult retro carries.
Two fits. Sport: navy or black track pants stacked over the collar, a white tee, and a navy hoodie, letting the shoe's bulk sit under a relaxed leg. Or school ready: dark jeans with a grey crewneck and a white tee, where the navy reads as neutral. The 4 has enough volume that it needs a wider or longer trouser to look balanced; a skinny leg makes it look heavy. Grade school lengths run shorter than adult numbering, so measure first. Brush the netting dry, spot clean the panels with mild soap, and use the lace wings rather than overtightening the laces if the instep feels snug.
The Air Jordan 4 owes much of its place in culture to film and advertising. Nike's Spike Lee directed campaigns, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the line into film language early, and the 4 is the model most associated with that era of Jordan on screen. From there the shoe travelled the same road the rest of the line did, referenced in music by rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and later handed to Travis Scott for Cactus Jack alongside the 1 and the 6. A grade school pair is how that history reaches its next audience.
The 4's parts are what you are buying: mesh netting set into the side quarters for airflow, plastic lace wings on both sides that let you set your own lockdown, a moulded heel counter, and a thick, blocky midsole carrying Nike Air, which has been in the line since the Air Jordan II. Midnight Navy is a forgiving finish, hiding scuffing and keeping crease lines quiet, so the visible white elements and the netting are where wear shows. Brush the mesh dry with a soft brush rather than wiping it, since cloth snags in the netting, and keep the midsole clean because on a chunky sole it is the largest surface you see.
