Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 21 March 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Cool Grey/Volt/Wolf Grey/Anthracite. Neon 95 is the Air Jordan 4 borrowing a colour story from the mid nineties, the years when Jordan Brand was about to be spun out as its own Nike division and running shoe design was at its most fluorescent. That contrast is the point. The 4 comes from Tinker Hatfield's run, the stretch after the III when the line stopped being a signature shoe and became a design series with a language of its own, and it has always been the most engineered looking model in the family. Dropping volt and neon accents onto that structure makes the shoe look like equipment from a decade that believed visible technology was the whole aesthetic. Worn now, it is nostalgia with an edge, not a soft one.
Let the neon be the only loud thing. Black wide leg trousers, a grey heavyweight hoodie and a black cap works because the shoe supplies all the electricity. For a sportier read, try grey technical shorts, a black long sleeve and white crew socks pulled just above the ankle so the neon accents get a clean frame. The 4 has a roomy last: if you sit between sizes, take the smaller and use the cages to secure the midfoot. Brush the mesh netting rather than scrubbing it, keep water off the midsole seams, and store it in a cool, dark place, since fluorescent dyes fade before the rest of the shoe shows any age.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball colliding with hip hop, and the nineties are the pivot: rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his shoes into their records while Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee as Mars Blackmon, put the line into film language. That decade also produced the reflex the market still runs on, that a limited release is a cultural event. A neon 4 is a direct quote of that era rather than a reissue of a specific game shoe, which is why it sits better with people who lived through the colour than with people chasing the earliest colourways.
Grey and black carry the body while the neon does the pointing: laces, tongue detail and the accents around the netting read hottest against a dark upper. The 4's caged eyelets remain the most useful part of the shoe, letting you tighten the midfoot independently of the ankle, and the open netting panels keep the volume of the shoe from turning into heat. Nike Air cushioning has run through this line from the Air Jordan II onward, and on the 4 it is what makes a heavy looking shoe wearable across a full day. Bright accents on a dark base age unevenly, so keep the neon parts out of long sun exposure and clean the midsole before grime sets into the seams.
