Released on 1 July 2024 and part of the Air Jordan 4 RM line. This release has a suede upper in Sail/Black/Canyon Rust/Coconut Milk/White. The 4 sits in the run of models that turned a signature shoe into a design series, the stretch after Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield from the Air Jordan III and gave the brand a visual language of its own: elephant print, the Jumpman on the tongue, materials borrowed from outside sport. RM is the reworked version of that outline, built for the street rather than a court, and Canyon Rust drops it into an earth palette that has nothing to do with team colours. That is a very current use of a very old shape. Jordan Brand has run as a standalone Nike division since 1997, and reworking archive silhouettes for daily wear is one of the things that scale buys you.
Rust is a warm neutral that behaves best with other warm tones. First recipe: brown or khaki cargo trousers with a cream crew neck, everything in the same temperature so the shoe looks integrated rather than added. Second: black jeans and a black jacket, using the rust as the only warmth in a cold fit, which sharpens it considerably. Skip navy above it. Good for long walking days, travel and autumn, and forgiving in dusty conditions. Sizing on reworked models can differ from a Jordan 1, so try before buying if possible. Brush dust off regularly, spot clean rather than soaking, and dry naturally away from direct heat.
Jordan Brand outgrew basketball long ago: it became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsored its first association football club, Paris Saint-Germain, in 2018, and by 2022 it was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. Lifestyle reworks like this one exist because of that reach. They are aimed at people who want the visual authority of a Jordan silhouette in a shoe that is comfortable to walk a city in, not at people chasing an archive release. Earth tones are the clearest signal of that intent.
Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan II, and on a 4 derived model that underfoot feel is the point of difference against a flat soled 1: there is spring in the step rather than court firmness. The upper reworks the 4's layered panel structure, and a rust tone means the shoe reads as a single warm mass with the construction lines showing as shadow rather than contrast. Earth tones hide dust extremely well, which suits a shoe built for walking. Expect the upper to soften and mould to the foot with use. Keep the sole unit clean at the edges, since that is where a reworked model shows its age first.
