A slide is the least glamorous thing a sneaker brand makes and one of the most honest, because it only exists for the moments around the game rather than the game itself: locker rooms, recovery, walking to the car. Jordan Brand can make one credibly because it stopped being a single shoe in 1997 and became a standalone Nike division with apparel, accessories and a full roster of its own. This is a recovery and downtime shoe. Recipe one: after the gym, with track trousers and a hoodie, worn over a thick sock in cold weather without apology, which is how they are actually worn in locker rooms. Recipe two: summer, with shorts and a plain tee, straight from home to the pool or the shops. Not a walking shoe: a slide gives no heel retention, so avoid long distances, stairs with heavy bags, and anything wet underfoot where the footbed can get slick. Slides are the uniform of athletes off duty, and Jordan Brand's roster now runs well beyond basketball: alongside signature players like Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson, it has signed NFL athletes including Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott and MLB names including Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter, plus WNBA athletes Maya Moore and Jordin Canada. The brand also became sole equipment provider to Michigan Wolverines football in 2016 and sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. The Jumpman, the house mark Peter Moore built with Michael Jordan, carries all of that onto an object with almost no surface.
Slides live or die on the strap and the footbed, and an all black build makes both read as one continuous object rather than as separate components. There is nothing to lace and nothing to break in, which is the point: you step in and go. Black hides pool water marks, dust and scuffing better than any other finish here, so maintenance is minimal. Rinse with clean water after beach or chlorine use, wipe the footbed dry rather than leaving it damp, and let it air fully before storing, because trapped moisture in an enclosed footbed is what makes any slide start to smell.
