Origin
Released on 12 December 2023 and part of the Jordan Hydro Slide line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Cement Grey/Fire Red. Black Cement is a colourway with a specific ancestry: cement refers to the grey cracked elephant print that Tinker Hatfield introduced on the Air Jordan III, the most recognisable material code the brand owns and one that now signals Jordan on its own without a logo. The Hydro line translates a numbered model into a slide, and this is the 4 rendered that way in grade school sizing. It is the least serious object the brand makes carrying one of its most serious references, which is a fair summary of what Jordan Brand became after 1997, when the line was reorganised as a full Nike division with accessories and apparel of its own.
Utility
Recipe one: the intended use, swim shorts, a tee, bare feet, and a quick walk from pool to changing room, where the black finish means it comes home looking the same as it left. Recipe two: summer casual, black shorts, a colourful tee, and a white crew sock, which is the way kids actually wear slides now. Do not use them for long walks or for running, since a flat moulded footbed gives no support. Size so the heel sits inside the back edge and the strap crosses the widest part of the foot. Rinse after chlorine, dry the footbed, and store them out of direct sun.
Influence
Elephant print is the reason the reference lands. Introduced on the third model, it moved off the shoe entirely and now works across apparel and accessories as a brand signal in its own right, in the same way the Jumpman does. That mark came from Peter Moore having Jordan recreate a mid leap pose in Bulls gear, and Nike successfully defended it when photographer Jacobus Rentmeester sued in 2015, with the Ninth Circuit affirming dismissal in February 2018 on the grounds that the images were not substantially similar. A kids slide inherits both signals without carrying any of the weight.
Construction
A slide is a moulded strap over a moulded footbed, and in a retro version the strap carries the graphic reference to its parent shoe rather than reproducing any of its structure. There is nothing to lace, nothing to break in and nothing to fail except the foam, which compresses gradually over months of use. GS is grade school sizing, so the footbed is scaled down and the strap is narrower than the adult version, which means it will hold a smaller foot properly but will not stretch to fit a larger one. Black hides pool grime and playground dust far better than the white and grey slides do, which matters for this age group.
