Origin
Part of the Jordan Hydro Slide line. This release has a synthetic upper in Black/Tour Yellow. The Hydro line is what happens when an archive gets translated into a slide. Rather than inventing a new object, Jordan Brand takes the design cues of a numbered model and rebuilds them as a moulded footbed and strap, which is only possible because the shapes and colour stories are recognisable enough to survive the loss of everything else. The Hydro 4 draws on the Air Jordan 4 and Thunder is a colour story carried over from that model's archive. This is the division working the way it has since 1997, treating its own history as a library of colours and marks rather than as a set of shoes it has to remake exactly.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. First, recovery: straight after a session or a long day, worn barefoot with shorts, letting your feet spread out. Second, styled: black shorts with a white tee and plain white crew socks, which is the version that reads deliberate. Sizing on slides is unforgiving, so if you fall between two, take the smaller so the strap actually holds. Rinse with cool water after chlorine or salt, dry in shade because direct sun hardens and warps foam, and keep them out of hot car boots. If the footbed starts flattening permanently, replace rather than persist.
Influence
Air Jordan became a lifestyle brand rather than a basketball one because the culture pulled it there, through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes, and through a collecting economy later valued around 2 billion dollars in resale. Once a mark travels that far, it stops needing a court to justify a product. A retro slide is the archive at its most casual: the same colour story people chase in a 20,000 dollar grail pair, applied to something you wear to the pool. Construction
A slide lives or dies on three things: footbed shape, strap hold and drying speed. This one is a contoured moulded footbed under a wide strap that carries the model's graphic language, meant to be worn barefoot, rinsed and worn again. It should feel soft on the first step, because there is no break in period for foam. Thunder's dark base is practical here, since it hides pool deck grime better than a light footbed would. Keep the strap adjusted snug rather than loose, since a slide that slips is a slide that wears unevenly at the heel and starts creaking within a season of regular use.
