Culture Note™
Released on 10 December 2023 and part of the Jordan MVP line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Anthracite/Anthracite. Once Jordan Brand became a standalone division inside Nike in 1997, it stopped needing every shoe to be a numbered signature model. That opened a second category: lifestyle shoes that draw on the line's design vocabulary without pretending to be a court release. The MVP sits there, built for the street rather than the game, and Black with Dark Grey is the most utilitarian way it comes. The palette is worth noting because this brand's own colours are Chicago red, black and white, and stripping the red out leaves a shoe that carries the shape language without the team signalling. It is a Jordan for people who want the brand's proportions and none of its noise.
All black with grey is the easiest shoe here to wear daily. Black tapered trousers, a grey crewneck and a dark jacket makes it disappear into a work fit, which is often what you want from a chunky sole. For weekends, dark denim with a cuff and a heavy grey hoodie lets the outsole and heel structure show. Avoid pairing with all black clothing head to toe unless the grey accents can breathe, or the shoe loses its shape visually. Care is minimal: brush the upper dry, wipe the midsole sidewall with a damp cloth, and clean the outsole grooves occasionally so grit does not wear the tread unevenly. These handle bad weather better than any leather retro in the range.
The line's move beyond basketball is the context for shoes like this. Jordan Brand took over the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016 and sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club, and by 2022 the division was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. Its athlete list runs well past the court, taking in Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott in the NFL, Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter in baseball, and Maya Moore and Jordin Canada in the WNBA. A blacked out lifestyle model is the everyday face of that expansion, the shoe the brand sells to people who will never step on a hardwood floor.
Lifestyle builds in this line take the structural cues from the archive and apply them to a softer last: layered panels, a defined heel, a chunky rubber outsole and cushioning suited to walking rather than to landing. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line from the second model onward, and street models sit within that engineering lineage. Black on black with grey means the panel edges register only in daylight, which is why this colourway looks like one solid object at a distance and like a layered shoe up close. Dark uppers are the easiest to maintain in this entire batch: dust brushes off, scuffs read as texture, and the only surface that needs regular attention is the outsole sidewall.
