Culture Note™
Released on 16 September 2023 and part of the Jordan MVP line. This release has a suede upper in Black/White/Game Royal. MVP is the most loaded three letters Jordan Brand can put on a shoe, and the model uses them plainly: this is a lifestyle silhouette named after the award, wearing the brand's design cues without being a numbered retro. Black with royal blue is a smart pairing for it, because royal blue is one of the few colours that reads as sport without belonging to Chicago. The brand behind it has been a Nike division since 1997, running its own athlete roster and its own design programme, and models like the MVP are how that division fills the space between the archive and the everyday. You get the language of the signature line at a wearable weight.
Dark shoes are easy to place. Recipe one: black jeans, a navy or charcoal crewneck, and a blue cap that picks up the royal accents, a fit that works in an office car park and a bar. Recipe two: black technical trousers with a black shell jacket, where the blue is the only colour in an all black outfit. True to size for most feet. Black uppers hide dirt but still collect dust, so brush them dry every couple of weeks and use a black safe cleaner on marks. Keep them away from bleach based cleaners entirely: on black synthetics the discolouration is permanent and shows up as a pale patch.
The MVP name points at a career that started, commercially, on 26 October 1984, when Nike signed a Chicago rookie to a six year 2.5 million dollar deal worth roughly three times any other in the league, unusually including a royalty on sales. That royalty is still paying: by 2022 Jordan Brand was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself. Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z did the cultural work. A shoe called MVP is the brand naming its own founding bet out loud.
Black carries the upper here with royal blue on the accents and branding, which is the most forgiving blocking Jordan makes: black hides scuffs, creasing and city dirt, and the blue gives the eye a single place to land. Nike Air cushioning has run through the line since the Air Jordan II and is why these silhouettes feel like Jordans rather than generic trainers underfoot. Style code DZ4475 041 identifies this pair. The practical upside of a dark upper is longevity of appearance: it will look presentable months after a white pair would have needed work, which makes it the sensible choice if you intend to wear rather than store.
