Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 26 March 2023 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a suede upper in White/University Red/Light Neutral Grey. The Air Max 1 86 Original Big Bubble restores the shoe to the proportion it had when Nike first put a window in a midsole. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and the 1987 Air Max was the moment it became visible, turning cushioning from an internal specification into the shoe's main visual event. The Big Bubble version returns the larger window of the earliest production, which is the detail collectors have argued about for years. In white with red, the shoe reads exactly as it was meant to: a running shoe designed to make an engineering claim, wearing the claim on the outside where everyone can check it.
Wear one: heritage running, grey sweatpants with a white tee and a navy jacket, letting the shoe sit as the reference object it is. Wear two: sharper, dark straight leg denim with a black overshirt, where white and red reads clean rather than nostalgic. Good for daily wear, walking and travel, not for actual running by modern standards. Fit runs slightly narrow and true to length. Care: keep the visible Air unit clean since a scuffed window ruins the whole effect, use a soft cloth on it rather than a brush, clean mesh and leather separately, and store away from sunlight to slow midsole yellowing.
The Air Max is one of the models Nike's own cultural history names directly: alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward, status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion, then permanent fixtures of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. In Europe the line acquired its own separate life entirely. Making the visible cushioning bigger was Nike showing its work, and it turned an engineering feature into a collectible detail. Very few technical decisions travel that far, and this one has now outlived several generations of the running shoes it was designed for.
The build is the classic running construction of its era: a mesh and leather panelled upper with the Swoosh as the dominant overlay, a foam midsole housing the enlarged visible Air unit at the heel, and a waffle influenced outsole descended directly from Bill Bowerman's habit of pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron to make a lighter, grippier tread. The larger window is the whole point of this version, and it changes the shoe's silhouette from the side more than any colour ever could. Sealed pressurised Air does not pack out the way open foam does, which is why this platform still feels alive under long walking rather than long running.
