Culture Note™
Released on 27 March 2023 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 line. This release has a atomknit upper in Hyper Pink/Laser Orange/White/Black. Hyper Pink on the Alphafly NEXT% 2 is a racing shoe dressed so you can see it from the crowd barrier, which is entirely the point of a marathon shoe. This is the top of Nike's running range, built on the same foam and plate thinking that changed distance racing. ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive material in the range, developed for the Vaporfly, which launched in 2017 pairing that foam with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step. Peer research found the Vaporfly could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. A saturated pink is what confidence at that level looks like.
Race day: pair with race shorts and a singlet, and run them over the distances where the platform pays, from half marathon upward. Session day: use them for goal pace work and long tempo efforts so your legs learn what race pace feels like on the plate. Do not use them for easy mileage, and do not walk around in them. Fit is snug and race oriented with a thin upper, so try before buying and expect a narrow feel. Care: air dry after every use, never machine wash a foam this soft, store them out of a hot car, and track their mileage carefully since the foam degrades before the upper does.
Nike's super shoe era rewrote the rules of its sport, literally. After the Vaporfly's launch in 2017 and the research showing it could cut marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, World Athletics issued rules on 31 January 2020 limiting sole thickness to 40mm and permitting one rigid plate, and requiring shoes to be available at general retail. Compliant models, including this racing family, remain legal to race in. That episode is the clearest recent evidence of what Nike's engineering culture, running from Bill Bowerman's waffle iron to ZoomX, is actually capable of when it points at a single problem.
Racing construction inverts the usual priorities: weight comes first, durability comes last. Expect a very light, thin upper with minimal structure, a tall ZoomX foam midsole for energy return, and Air Zoom units in the forefoot, which is what the name is telling you. The plate technology in this family is designed to add spring rather than stability, so the shoe rewards a runner who can hold form and punishes one who cannot. Understand the trade you are making: this platform is engineered for race pace and it will not last the mileage a daily trainer does. Save them for the sessions and races where the margin matters.
