Culture Note™
Released on 14 July 2022 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 line. This release has a atomknit upper in Mint Foam/Volt/Coconut Milk/Cave Purple. Mint Foam with Volt is the friendliest colourway a marathon racing shoe has any right to wear. The shoe underneath it is not friendly at all: the Alphafly is the marathon end of the family Nike opened in 2017 with the Vaporfly, which paired ZoomX, an altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive Nike makes, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step, and which peer reviewed research found could improve marathon times by as much as 4.2 percent. This is the second edition of that shoe, dressed in pale mint with acid Volt accents, which is a start line colour with a training run temperament.
Race and rehearse, nothing else. Recipe one: race morning over the half or full distance, with split shorts, a singlet and thin socks, laced snug because thin race uppers rely on the lace for hold. Recipe two: one or two race pace or long tempo sessions beforehand on smooth road, so the plate feels familiar rather than novel. Mint and Volt shows dirt quickly, which is another reason to keep it off daily duty. Size with a thumbnail of room at the toe. Never machine wash, never dry near heat, keep the exposed foam away from kerbs and gravel that gouge it, and store the shoe flat rather than crushed at the bottom of a bag.
Nike has always made running measurable rather than mystical. It put run tracking into the shoe through Nike+, its partnership with Apple, long before wearables were normal, and the carbon plated shoes turned the marathon into a technology argument that the sport answered with a rulebook rather than a ban. Behind all of it sits the oldest asset the brand owns: Steve Prefontaine, its first track endorser, coached by Bowerman at Oregon, whose statue stands at Nike headquarters and who made running look like a personality rather than an activity. A pale mint racer on an amateur runner is that inheritance, priced for anyone.
A racing shoe is a midsole with an upper attached. Almost all of the engineering sits under the foot, where ZoomX foam and the carbon plate work together to return energy rather than swallow it, while the upper is kept thin and breathable because it only has to hold a foot for a couple of hours. The rules that shape this category are worth knowing before you buy: World Athletics set limits on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm and permitting one rigid plate, and requiring general retail availability, and compliant models in this family remain legal for competition. No stack figure, weight or style code is published to you here, so verify the specific release, and expect a short life measured in races.
