Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 5 March 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Oil Green/Multi-Color/Sail. The Air Max 1 is the shoe where Nike stopped hiding its engineering. The 1987 Air Max put a window into the midsole so the pressurised gas unit was visible, turning cushioning itself into a design feature and starting the line that would carry the brand into everyday dress. The SP designation marks a special projects build, the tier Nike reserves for outside collaborators, and Mellow is the version made with Concepts. Handing the model to a shop rather than an athlete is a very different move from Nike's usual partnership pattern, which historically meant agencies like Wieden and Kennedy from 1976, technology partners like Apple for Nike+, or league deals with the NBA.
Special projects Air Max 1s reward plain clothing. Build the fit from neutrals, straight leg denim or wide chinos with a plain crewneck, and let the shoe's materials be the only texture in play. The second recipe leans sporty: track pants, a zip up and white socks, which is closer to how Air Max models were originally worn on the street. Air Max 1s fit true to size with a slightly narrow forefoot, so wide feet should take half a size up. Dry weather only. Brush textured panels regularly with a soft dry brush, spot clean with minimal moisture, and never machine wash a shoe with a sealed air unit and mixed materials.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, then returned through the 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure waves, and the retailer collaboration is how that street level relationship became formal. Nike's other collaborations have tended to be corporate or artistic: Apple for run tracking, Takashi Murakami on a Nike related digital work in 2022, the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT acquired in December 2021. Shop collaborations sit closer to the ground, made by people who sell sneakers to a specific city and who know what that city will actually wear.
The Air Max 1's structure is a set of overlapping panels: a mudguard, an eyestay, a heel counter and a Swoosh, each cut so material choice reads clearly across the shape. On a special projects build the material story is the whole point, so expect texture and finish to be doing work that a general release colourway would leave to colour alone. Underneath sits Nike Air, the sealed pressurised unit visible through the midsole window, the technology that made the 1987 shoe a landmark. The outsole is the waffle derived tread that goes back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron in pursuit of a lighter, grippier sole.
