Culture Note™
Released on 1 August 2019 and part of the Dior B23 line. This release has the White/Black colourway. The B23, style code 3SH118YJP_H069, is Dior's own high-top, and it is the shoe that carries Oblique canvas as a full upper rather than as a trim. That matters historically: when Kim Jones designed the Air Dior Jordan 1 with Jordan Brand for pre-fall 2020, the Oblique monogrammed Swoosh was borrowed directly from this shoe. In other words, the B23 is the source and the Air Dior is the quotation. Oblique itself is the diagonal repeat monogram the house uses across bags, ready-to-wear and sneakers, sitting alongside Cannage, the diamond quilting drawn from the Napoleon III chairs in the Avenue Montaigne salon, as a code every Dior director inherits.
Two ways to wear it. First, worn as the loudest element: black or dark denim, straight leg, a plain heavy tee and nothing else patterned, so the monogrammed upper carries the outfit entirely. Second, worn as texture rather than logo: cropped wool trousers and a long overcoat, where the high collar sits just below the trouser hem and the Oblique reads as a woven texture from a distance. Treat the canvas seriously in Indian weather: protect before first wear, keep them out of monsoon streets, brush dry rather than wash, and never machine clean. Store with shoe trees so the canvas collar does not collapse.
The B23 is the shoe that proved Dior could hold its own in sneakers before the Jordan collaboration made that point to a wider audience. Kim Jones ran menswear from 2018 to 2025 and used exactly this kind of object to turn the house into the reference point for luxury meeting streetwear, alongside work with KAWS, Shawn Stussy, Hajime Sorayama, Daniel Arsham, Raymond Pettibon, Sacai and 1017 ALYX 9SM. The lineage runs further back: John Galliano's Spring-Summer 2000 show absorbed hip-hop's influence into a couture house and launched the Saddle bag, and the B23 is that same instinct applied to footwear.
The defining feature is that the upper is monogrammed canvas, not printed leather, so the Oblique pattern is part of the material rather than a layer on top of it. That gives a softer break-in than a leather high-top and a much lighter feel on the foot, and it is the reason the shoe drapes slightly at the collar rather than standing rigid. It also sets the care rules: canvas absorbs, so these need protecting before first wear rather than cleaning after damage. The high-top form gives Oblique the largest continuous surface in Dior's footwear line, which is why the pattern reads clearly at distance on this silhouette and less so on lower cuts.
