Released on 15 May 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a leather upper. TV Signal takes its name from the colour bar test card, the pattern broadcasters put on screen when there is nothing to show, and turns it into a Dunk High SB. It is a very Nike SB idea: pick a piece of visual furniture that everyone recognises and nobody looks at, then make it a shoe. The palette is a set of blocked bright panels rather than a two colour team split, which means this one reads as a graphic object from across the street. Style code CZ2253 100 identifies it. Where most Dunks borrow from universities or sports teams, this one borrows from the television set, which puts it closer to the skate scene's habit of laughing at mass media while living inside it.
Multi colour shoes need a quiet outfit. Wear it with black wide leg trousers and a plain white tee so the panels are the only pattern, or with washed indigo denim and a grey zip hoodie for a low key everyday version that still lets the colours land. It belongs in street and weekend settings, gigs, skate parks and anywhere the point is to be seen. Size as you would any Dunk and lace high, because the collar padding only works when it is engaged. Clean each panel separately with a soft damp cloth so colours do not bleed into one another, never machine wash, and dry away from direct sunlight to stop the brights fading unevenly.
Nike SB has always run on the tension between corporate scale and scene credibility, and it learned the limits the hard way when it used Minor Threat's 1981 album art on a 2005 tour flyer, drew criticism from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. Nike's history with borrowed media goes back further: its unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution led Apple Records to sue and the ads were pulled in March 1988. A shoe built on broadcast colour bars sits neatly in that story, a brand that keeps taking mass culture apart and selling the pieces back.
Panel blocking is the construction story here. Each colour sits on its own overlay, which means the quality of the shoe depends on how cleanly those panels are cut and stitched, and how well the dyes hold against each other. This is the Dunk High SB build, so expect a padded tongue and a supportive collar, the specification skateboarding demanded from the line. A multi panel shoe creases in more places than a mono colour one, and that creasing becomes part of how it looks, so buy it expecting character rather than preservation. Nike's grip heritage runs back to Bowerman's waffle iron, the founding piece of the company's engineering, and it is still the reason these hold a board.
